Casual, effortless and bordering on the bohemian, Lee Mathews’s
style is an expression of herself: every piece is born directly from
her sensibilities. Gentle persistence and dedication has resulted in
her strong positioning in the market. Her loyal customer base
appreciate the effort and passion behind each garment designed and made
by Lee Mathews.
Collections are created from bits
and pieces that are collected and sourced such as antique buttons,
fabric swatches, Victorian postcards, artworks from around the
world…practically anything that has something that catches the
designer’s eye and from there the colour palette, mood and designs
emerge.
Fabrics are given a new life through dying, washing and
treating and garments are created individually and finished off with
handmade details and unique additions. She is inspired by vintage
clothing from the 20’s and 30’s, many of which take pride of place
around her workroom, but adds her own contemporary twist.
Lee’s
use of local labour is important to the creative vision of the
business. She calls on the expertise of the Red Cross women volunteers
who knit colourful woollen squares which she makes into scarves, as
well as women’s groups in Tamworth and Armidale who knit merino
blankets for the store.
